Good article. One note- 100 times 200 equals 20,000. Not 1000 times 200 which equals 200,000. We must be careful not to appear to be intentionally overstating the facts. I think it was a simple math error, but someone you are debating might have some fun with you over it.

Couple of things -
a) the Ford Model T to Prius analogy doesn't work because that 'evolution' requires intelligent agency to achieve it. Natural selection doesn't take place, it is active intelligent selection.
b) the tracing of ancestry through DNA is now coming up with completely different evolutionary trees so the methodology cannot be said to established to make this conclusion
c) common ancestry and common design can look very similar. To continue the car analogy above - the Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Octavia, Audi A3 and Seat Leon have all the same basic underpinnings but are all different due to active design. Some of these cars do not have some features that others do but they have commonly designed constituents (eg the wiring loom) that serve all. That means that some of the cars have vestigial features that are not used because the car doesn't have that option fitted. So design is still the correct answer, even though it looks like that design has redundant or meaningless features.

Hi Ben,

I've responded to several similar comments, for which I think there are plausible Adam & Eve solutions. So, look for a post on that soon...or you can listen to the sermon for a couple. :)

Hey Jonathan, that is a well written article, very thorough yet accessible to lay people. You are excellent at this! You seem to be espousing theistic evolution ala Collins. But what do you make of a historic Adam and Eve? That is the difficult part for me -- as I think it is extremely difficult if not impossible to posit a historic Adam and Eve (which is integral to the bible) within theistic evolution. I read Keller's article and he wrestles with the same tension, though he doesn't offer a definitive answer. I am a pastor like you and am interested in how you addressed that issue with your church.
